MegaUpload Shut Down....

Fall Of  Megaupload..

Megaupload is an online Hong Kong–based company established in 2005 that ran a one-click hosting online service of the same name, along with its sister services. The site was shut down by the U.S. Justice Department on January 19, 2012, during an investigation into alleged copyright infringement, leading to what activist group Anonymous calls "the single largest Internet attack in its history"...Megaupload

A federal indictment Thursday accused Megaupload.com of costing copyright holders at least $500 million in lost revenue. The indictment was unsealed one day after websites including Wikipedia and Craigslist shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to make it easier for authorities to go after sites with pirated material, especially those with overseas headquarters and servers.

The site's founders have been charged with violating piracy laws.
Federal prosecutors have accused it of costing copyright holders more than $500m (£320m) in lost revenue. The firm says it was diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.

The US Justice Department said that Megaupload's two co-founders Kim Dotcom, formerly known as Kim Schmitz, and Mathias Ortmann were arrested in Auckland, New Zealand along with two other employees of the business at the request of US officials. It added that three other defendants were still at large.
"This action is among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States and directly targets the misuse of a public content storage and distribution site to commit and facilitate intellectual property crime," said a statement posted on its website.more info

Wikipedia Blackout is over.. but the Protest is not done yet!!!

Wikipedia - Let there be light again.....

A 24-hour blackout of the English Wikipedia website has been hailed a success by its founders.
The blackout, which started at 5am on Wednesday, was organised as a protest against two Bills aimed at stopping copyright infringement currently working their way through the US government.
Campaigners say the Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (Pipa), aimed at stopping copyright infringement by foreign websites, would actually disrupt free expression and harm the internet.

After the act Wikipedia published a page saying thank you for protecting Wikipedia...
in this article Wikipedia wrote..

fig. Wikipedia Thank you page

"More than 162 million people saw our message asking if you could imagine a world without free knowledge. You said no. You shut down Congress’s switchboards. You melted their servers. From all around the world your messages dominated social media and the news. Millions of people have spoken in defense of a free and open Internet."

" For us, this is not about money. It’s about knowledge. As a community of authors, editors, photographers, and programmers, we invite everyone to share and build upon our work. "

They also stated that  "SOPA and PIPA are not dead: they are waiting in the shadows..."

At the end of the page a motivational line is added saying (check out the page!!!)

"We’re turning the lights back on. Help us keep them shining brightly."

Wikipedia Blackout

 The Protest.....Jan 18th 2012

The Wikipedia community has blacked out the English version of Wikipedia for 24 hours on January 18th to raise awareness about legislation being proposed by the U.S. Congress — the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate -- and to encourage readers to speak out against it.

This legislation, if passed, will harm the free and open Internet.

The blackout will last 24 hours -- from midnight to midnight EST (05:00 UTC Wed to 05:00 UTC Thu).

This decision was made by Wikipedia’s global community of editors -- the people who built Wikipedia. The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that operates Wikipedia, also opposes SOPA and PIPA, and supports the editors' blackout.

SOPA and PIPA are real threats to the free and open Internet. Although recent media reports have suggested that the bills are losing support, they are not dead. On January 17th, SOPA's sponsor said the bill will be discussed and pushed forward in early February. PIPA could be debated in the U.S. Senate as soon as next week. There is a need to send a strong message those bills like SOPA and PIPA must not move forward: they will cause too much damage.more info

Internet Censorship Worldwide

What is Internet Censorship....

Internet censorship
is the control or suppression of the publishing of, or access to information on the Internet. It may be carried out by governments or by private organizations either at the behest of government or on their own initiative. Individuals and organizations may engage in self-censorship on their own or due to intimidation and fear.
Opinions on the topic of Internet censorship vary, with arguments being made both for and against censorship. Moreover, the extent of Internet censorship varies on a country-to-country basis. While some counties have little Internet censorship, other countries go as far as to limit the access of information such as news and suppress discussion among citizens. Internet censorship can also come about due to events such as the Arab Spring, which led to instances of censorship in an attempt to undermine the protesters.More info
